Big issue

Here's something I didn't anticipate when I outlined Fabled Lands Publishing's plans for 2016: a new large format (8" x 10") edition of the existing FL books.

How it came about is that later in the year we're hoping to publish a paperback version of the new book, The Serpent King's Domain. And then Jamie and I realized we couldn't only do a 6" by 8" edition. What about all the FL readers who bought the original large format books back in the '90s - you're going to want book 7 to match those, am I right?

So as a kind of experiment, seeing as we have the text files already edited, we're releasing new 8" by 10" versions of the original books, starting with The War-Torn Kingdom and Cities of Gold and Glory. Now hang on, though. Don't rush out and buy these if you're already happy with the editions you've got. There's no new content here. And we haven't been able to duplicate the fold-out covers of the original Pan Macmillan editions; even though print on demand has come a long way, it isn't there yet. But if you had an incomplete collection of 8" x 10" books and prefer that format, now's your chance. Oh, and these new editions feature Russ's regional maps in full glorious colour, so there is that.

Take your pick. The new large format edition...

  1. Great idea, I'll have my card ready for when you get to book 6.

That will just leave you doing the same exercise for books 3-6 branded as Quest for all the readers of that series who only have the first 2. :)

    1. Believe it or not, Michael, I did wonder if I ought to do a Quest edition also. But then I'd have to do Sagaland editions for the German market, and... it might never end :)

    5. Thanks, David. HOI seems to be the most popular of my old gamebooks - which is nice, seeing as it's my own favourite too.

  4. I just got War Torn Kingdom in LARGE and it's MAGNIFICENT. I already bought the tiny reissues for ants (except book 6), but I will definitely get them all in large now. Thank you so much!
I hope you still plan on publishing all 6 books in large?

  5. Aww, I hope you do find the time, they deserve to be preserved in POD like this. They aren't as nice as I remember my Sagaland editions, but a lot better than the paperbacks! I will definitely buy 7-12 in those editions. Thank you for your hard work!

    1. Thank you! And I must admit I get more of a kick out of the large format books than the small paperbacks. That's how FL is meant to be seen/played.

  6. Holy shit; I just saw this! I used to own the large format books too but they disappeared into the mists of time! I am going to get all of these. Cheers Dave!

  7. Please, please release large-format editions of books 2-6! These are gorgeous. Also, I suffer from a neurological condition that makes using my hands painful -- normal sized paperbacks are just impossible to hold open for me. This is close to proper RPG manual size, and I can actually lay it out flat! Just wonderful stuff.

    1. The good news is there is already a large-format edition of book 2, Carl. We'll be working on books 3-6 as soon as my spare time allows, and the paperback of book 7 will be in both regular and large formats.
