But no, parsing that sentence it's saying that in 480 BC Rodos is under Persian control and has been since 490 BC, but at the time of the events being investigated (ie 491 BC) it was in its previous state of autonomy. The construction I used would be ambiguous only if, instead of an ongoing state, I'd put something like "but which was then (in 491) conquered" because with a single action you wouldn't be able to tell (other than from context, ie the dates) whether "then" meant "at that time" or "next".

Glad we cleared that up :-)Dave Morrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14468228790874490693noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2141372262111342844.post-28062714248190140022016-09-22T14:14:22.989+01:002016-09-22T14:14:22.989+01:00I like that kind of comment, Kairam, believe it or...I like that kind of comment, Kairam, believe it or not - I was forever writing to Marvel Comics about things like that :-) But there's no problem. The scenario takes place in 480 BC. The characters are investigating events from 11 years earlier. In 491 BC, the Aeginetan fugitives were heading for Rodos with King Cleomenes in pursuit. At that time, Rodos was an autonomous state. One year later (ie ten years before the scenario takes place) it was conquered by the Persians. That was 490 BC, one year after 491 BC. See: "...for Rodos, a Greek colony that has been in Persian control since 490 BC but which was then (in 491) autonomous." The problem is that 491 BC is before 490 BC.

Best,

KairamKid U #nothttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04081167263368212346noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2141372262111342844.post-32100119138030621062016-06-01T08:21:16.116+01:002016-06-01T08:21:16.116+01:00Thanks to Tim Berners-Lee :-)Thanks to Tim Berners-Lee :-)Dave Morrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14468228790874490693noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2141372262111342844.post-80715737681953688902016-06-01T07:22:34.680+01:002016-06-01T07:22:34.680+01:00Astounding knowledge of ancient Greek history....Astounding knowledge of ancient Greek history....mundialecterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10204293820750293401noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2141372262111342844.post-78022251704246562812016-05-30T10:29:23.519+01:002016-05-30T10:29:23.519+01:00That's a shame. Tried with different groups both as GM and player; it just never quite got me where I felt like commiting the time for a solid campaign. Love to pick up sourcebooks like the GURPS ones on sale when I'm in gaming stores.

Michael A.https://www.blogger.com/profile/05321078010906346868noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2141372262111342844.post-85734829742749962962016-05-28T00:00:13.123+01:002016-05-28T00:00:13.123+01:00Strikes me that you ought to get into GURPS, Micha...Strikes me that you ought to get into GURPS, Michael. Steve Jackson Games have an extensive range of historical sourcebooks, including Rome and Vikings. There's even a pretty good one for Aztecs. Nothing about the Great Game, though, so if you're making a list of projects I'd put that one at the top.

As for fantasy worlds with interchangeable settings - yep, I'm with you there. I can't believe how many gamebooks and RPGs ( both face-to-face and computerised) have same old tropes: elves with pointy ears and long white hair, dwarves in mail surcoats carrying an axe. Yawn. Why bother to rehash something that's been done ten thousand times before, and not even try to bring anything new to the mix? It's baffling how readily people will settle time and again for the same tired fantasy formula.Dave Morrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14468228790874490693noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2141372262111342844.post-85892719211262171672016-05-27T19:04:21.655+01:002016-05-27T19:04:21.655+01:00This sounds like an amazing RPG campaign.

IMO, there are so many great stories that one can spin off from, and great settings (which has the additional advantage of being "grounded" in ways that are hard to achieve in a fantasy setting without a lot of hard work).

But I can't think of more than a handful of CRPGs that do this. Darklands is one, Jeff Vogel's Nethergate another - although both with fantastic elements. A few more recent indie games. A pity.

Doing a Greek RPG is one of the game projects on my bucket list. Along with a Roman RPG a la Roma Sub Rosa. And a game set with a protagonist involved in the Great Game (maybe something Flashman like?) And Vikings...

...and I'm never going to manage all of them, but maybe a couple...Michael A.https://www.blogger.com/profile/05321078010906346868noreply@blogger.com
