Murdoch press bow before Dirk's evil majesty

I've been saying that Dirk Lloyd was going to conquer the world, and it's happening sooner than I thought. Yesterday, the Sunday Times crowned Dark Lord: The Teenage Years their children's book of the week. They know evil genius when they see it.

It can't be long before all the other British newspapers jump on the bandwagon - followed by their US counterparts when Bloomsbury (who just bought the rights for a mid-five-figure sum after a fierce bidding war) start releasing the series in America early next year. And not long after that you should be able to watch the fabulous NBC television series. I wonder who they'll cast as Dirk. A very scary child indeed, no doubt.

Details of Dark Lord and other Fabled Lands properties in our Spark Furnace online bookstore.

  4. Thanks, Ikaros. It's interesting that many of the publishers who turned the book down are now calling to find out what Fabled Lands LLP's next project might be. Best served cold, they say :-)

  5. Hello oh wise and all-knowing Fabled Lands author(s),

Forgive me if I'm asking a question to which the answer should be obvious, but any news on whether further releases of the FL books themselves are likely, either in print or digital? I seem to remember from this blog that the original plan was to see if the reprinted books 1-4 generated any interest first?

I've been reading back through your blog and there is lots of cool stuff (apps, RPGs, comics, snippets, etc) but I can't seem to find a recent update on the actual FL books themselves. Apologies if my eyesight has been blighted by a grumpy Trau or something...

  6. All 6 existing FL books will be out next Easter in digital form, Michael - that's Android, browser and possibly Kindle. And the company that's publishing them is also interested in following up with Blood Sword and Way of the Tiger (if those go ahead, they will be on iOS too) and may also finance FL books 7-12 on all major digital formats.

The FL print books are selling steadily, but before we proceed with more of those we need to prove the books can be profitable, and that means leading with the app versions. Our hope is that books 5-8 and books 9-12 will eventually come out in deluxe trade paperback editions, but as I say that's going to come after the digital versions.

  7. Are megara going to have the first 6 books as apps by next easter?

  8. Not Megara, this is another company. I'll be showing some of their artwork for books 1-6 here soon, and FL readers are going to be delighted, I think. It's like the books had drawings of what the FL world is like, and now here's the real thing.

  9. Huzzah! Good news. Many thanks Dave for the speedy response. I shall look forward to them. For what it's worth, I'd certainly buy Kindle editions, even of the books I already have.

  10. Will the 6 new digital versions work together like the flapp app that was made a while back? That would be rather good.

  11. Oh, please! I hope that the next books will be available on Kindle (even better with active content!)
My only concern will be to bought back an special FL 1-4... for the sake of the collection

  12. In the review it says that the Dark Lord is set in thr Fabled Lands world?

  13. It's not set in the fabled lands world, it is released by Fabled Lands LLP, the company that will one day bring us books 7-12.

  14. As to whether Dirk's homeland is part of the Fabled Lands world... We're not saying.
