Your wish is my command

If you already own a copy of the Virtual Reality gamebook Twist of Fate, a couple of things... First, let me shake your hand. Not a lot of those babies made it out into the world. The original '80s gamebook boom was dying out (well, it was 1994) and this was last in the series, too.

Secondly, I'll understand if you don't want to shell out for the recent Critical IF edition (now titled Once Upon A Time In Arabia) just to read the new prologue. The rest of the book is slightly revised, but substantially no different from the 1994 version.

At the same time, if you're a collector you won't want to miss that new prologue. Here's the solution. You can download a free PDF version right here. That'll give you the prologue, the character sheet and Jon Hodgson's vertiginously amazing new cover. Those were the three wishes you had in mind, right?

  1. Nice one Dave! I own all the original VR series so this is a top thing to do for us old timers. Much appreciated!

    1. My pleasure, Richard. Now, if you should have a few spare minutes, my own wish would be for a review on Amazon ;-)

  2. Thank you so much. First the free eBook version of Down Among the Dead Men, then this. Very generous to the fans!

  3. Hello Dave,

I recently wrote a review for Heart of Ice on Amazon, and I'm in the process of writing others for some of your gamebooks. I like to see it as a way to say thanks for your kndness to gamebook fans :-)

I recently bought TWIST OF FATE and I must say that I was disapointed with the fact that the Russ Nicholson's illos were not there. I re-read your blog posts and I see that you mentionned this point in the post. But really, it would be fantastic if there was a way to ge these illos in a pdf or something. I am so buts that I would print and glue these into my ToF book :-)
Maybe I should rather try to contact Russ Nicholson via his blog?

Anyway, thanks for the good work, and I can tell you that I'm waiting impatiently for the re-release of BloodSword and the new Fabled Lands book(s)! :-)

    Vinny

    2. Sorry about that. I did a post where I explained that I don't have a spare copy of TWIST OF FATE that I can cut up in order to scan Russ's pictures. If he ever finds the original artwork, though, I promise we'll do a new edition with those pictures reinstated.
