One life is enough

We included resurrection deals in Fabled Lands because we wanted a diegetic way of saving your character. Because coming back to life is part of the fantasy world, not a meta-event, the idea is that it doesn't break immersion the way a videogame-style save point would.

The drawback is that in the early stages of the game, before you're rich enough to pay for resurrection deals, death is unforgiving. Players of Dungeon Crawl Classics will be familiar with the funnel, a baptism of fire for 0th level characters, but I can see how it's a pain in FL. In retrospect, we should have started you off with a free resurrection deal in each book.

Players of Prime Games' Fabled Lands CRPG mostly enjoy testing themselves against the brutal vagaries of fate, and somebody has now done a walkthrough that shows how you can get all the achievements in the game without dying once. I didn't even imagine that was possible. There's a tsunami of spoilers there, naturally, but if you're frustrated with your progress and don't mind benefiting from a helping hand then give it a try.

  1. I always liked the description of the rebirthing process - can't remember which deity or book now - with the reader staggering outside to drink from the fountain; the idea that the priesthood had bought you back to life but their care for you ended there.

Speaking of resurrection deals, do you know if there is any chance of serpent king games being resurrected any time soon/ever?

    1. I wish I could report good news of SKG, but I suspect the only new Dragon Warriors material we're likely to see in the foreseeable future will be from Red Ruin Publishing. Still, their adventures really are very good indeed.

    2. Yes they are, and there's loads of great stuff here too, as well as on the Patreon.

Still, sad to hear that there won't be anything else coming out of SKG - it looks like they had gotten pretty close with Cursed Kings, text and art apparently in, and they were talking about formatting. Surprised they weren't able to get that one out of the door at least.

Out of curiosity have SKG given a reason? Last post on the website blog was over a year ago and I haven't been able to find anything public on it.

    3. I haven't heard a peep, which is what makes me fear that nothing is in the pipeline. Robert Dale's Brymstone is another project I was dearly hoping to see. Well, never say never...

The trouble is that there's very little money to be made from Dragon Warriors, so it's a labour of love for Red Ruin and not really a viable business for SKG. Even when the legendary James Wallis was resurrecting DW with a whole flurry of beautifully produced books, it never made enough to pay the writers, artists and editors and still have a commercially worthwhile profit. I wish it were otherwise.
