Cannes do

Next month I'm going to be at the Festival International des Jeux as guest of our French publisher Alkonost. I rarely attend games conventions but Russ Nicholson, who died last year, would normally have been at something like FIJ. It's yet another reminder how much we miss him.

FIJ won't lack for stalwarts of the industry, however. Jonathan Green, Sir Ian Livingstone and Steve Jackson* will also be there, among others, so if you're able to get to Cannes you'll hear enough gamebook and RPG talk to last you all year.

* But see comments below. I'm only 100% sure about Jon Green.

  1. Is that AI Dave, Dave, or human Dave, Dave? If the latter, can you let me know what moisturiser you use?

    1. Moisturiser, Andy? I'm an old-fashioned bloke, me. It's soap and water and nowt else.

But yes, you're right, that picture is AI's version of me. Fairly authentic except for the lack of wrinkles!

    2. You can have some of mine, Dave, I've got mountains of the stuff. I don't use it either, but everyone I know gives it me as a Christmas present for some reason. Perhaps they're trying to tell me something.

p.s. You were right about Succession. I might have to watch it again given it's so quickfire, or read the scripts, Greg and Tom had me in stitches the whole way through.

    3. As long as they're not giving you deodorant or mouthwash, Andy, you're golden.

I had to watch Succession twice to catch everything. Now I'm working my way through the scripts. Greg and Tom are brilliant, especially the ortolan-eating scene.

    1. Now that you mention it, I can't be absolutely certain. My French publisher said they would, but that was months ago and might have been an unconfirmed rumour. Jonathan Green definitely will be, as I saw his name on the website.

By the way it's "Sir Ian", not "Sir Livingstone". But no big deal as I'm sure he'll be Lord Livingstone before too long!

    2. Oooops! I beseech your grace to pardon me (as in Shakespeare 😊), I am not very familiar with the british society codes... actually, neither with the continental. 🫣😶😁😇

    3. No need to apologise, Gil. I sometimes think we British deliberately keep our society as confusing as possible just so we can correct other people's impressions :-)

    4. Re: Lord Livingstone...I think he'd have to take the title "...of Firetop Mountain" wouldn't he?
