Return to the Fabled Lands this Christmas

We've got a whole slew of great Tekumel material coming up, including campaign backgrounds and scenarios, but I figured you wouldn't want to miss this first ever look at the new edition FL books. (The first edition Book Three in the background shows the new format size.)

The first four books are rolling off the presses right now, and you should be seeing them on Amazon, Barnes & Noble and other online stores in a couple of weeks. At only $8.99 each (£5.99 in Britain) they make a pretty good Christmas gift. Or Hannukah, or Yule, or any excuse really!

  1. Absolutely fantastic news, congratulations. Great price. And I can't wait to see books 7-12 finally printed.

  3. Hi!

Maybe at some point there should be ninjas appearing in Akatsurai (as mentioned in the Dweomer library), unless they really are that stealthy that you don't even see them (actually that is cool as well ^^).
Can't wait to get my hands on the new paperbacks by the way.

    Cheers Andreas

P.S. I know that it's not even been thought of, but it would be great to have a rerelease of the German Sagaland as well (the logo was capital)!

  4. There was talk a while back of a new German edition, Andreas, but I'm not sure if that is still on the cards.

As for ninja in Akatsurai - well, as Akatsurai is based on 12th century Japan, not the 16th century which is the more typical inspiration for Oriental RPGs, any ninja you meet would be goblin-trained spellcasters rather than spies in black pyjamas. But I'm not ruling it out ;-)

And for the more conventional breed of RPG ninja, have you downloaded your free copy of Tetsubo yet? It's right there in the sidebar.

  5. Do you know if any of these books are being sold in Canadian bookstores?

  6. Awesome! I just talked myself out of spending most of a £60 amazon voucher on an arkham horror expansion, so these are going straight on the list. Makes up for my disappointment that the iOS app version's iPad only, at least - I'd originally thought it was going to be available for the iPhone as well. :(

But the books being that cheap is great news.

  7. Ugh. Did I really just post that without remembering to mention that THOSE BOOKS LOOK AMAZING.

  8. Agreed! Though I will reserve judgement until I see these books with my own eyes. Of course, I will good review on Amazon website later.

Otherwise, any idea on when fabled lands website will be done?

  9. Hamza, I'm hoping they'll be on Amazon.ca, but I can't guarantee that. You most likely won't see them in retail bookstores anyway, you're going to have to order them online.

The app is iPad only to begin with so as to take full advantage of the graphics, but if it sells well enough maybe an iPhone version will come later. Just as with the print books, though, those early sales have to justify it.

The FL website *has* to be ready within 1-2 weeks because there is a link to it in the books. However, that's outside my control. To find out more you'd have to email info@fabledlands.net ;-)

  10. As for a German edition, the Mantikoreverlag aims to release the first book in 1st half of 2011 as far as I know. Will be named "Die Legenden von Harkuna" instead of "Sagaland" though.

Any news on when the books will be published for e-reader?

  11. Glad to hear the German edition is still on track. I hadn't heard anything about that for a while, but if we get firmer details I'll post them here.

An e-reader like a Kindle, you mean? Could work, but somebody would have to go through and insert all those hyperlinks. And then tie that into the inventory, character sheet and ship's manifest screens. In the meantime, I'll be playing Megara's drop-dead gorgeous full-color 2D crpg version on iPad...

  12. Kindle has about 2 million users, iPad is already over 5 million.

  13. Anon, it's not either/or. I wouldn't mind seeing both iOS and Kindle editions - and heck, a Sony Reader edition too :-)

  14. Congrats guys! Hope the new, afforadable format picks up a whole new generation of adventurers..

  15. Will the page thickness be the same as the original titles? That sort of paper has anti-yellowing properties, as my copy of Cities of Gold and Glory is nice and white after 10 years! I also wondered whether FL 5 and 6 will have any additional content. Also, what is the status of the new print editions of Blood Sword, The Way of the Tiger, Duel Master, Et al?

  16. The paper is a little thinner than the old editions, Mike, and the text size is a fraction smaller too. We had to make minor sacrifices like that in order to keep the books affordable - though rest assured the quality is on a par with series like Fighting Fantasy.

Fabled Lands LLP has the license to publish the Blood Sword books and is negotiating to get Way of the Tiger and Duel Master. Those could be on sale as early as next spring - depending on sales of the 2nd edition FL books.

  19. Great news! Congratulations, Dave and Jamie!
I’ll spread the good news here in Chile.
    Ikaros

PS: by the way, can I ask a personal favor? I would love to see an article about how do you actually write a Gamebook (... and specially, this Masterpiece! How did you write Fabled Lands) Thanks!

  20. Hi Ikaros - great idea. We could do it as a discussion between me, Jamie and Paul Mason, all of whom have written our fair share of gamebooks over the years.

  21. That'll be awesome!!
    Thanks!!
