When Doctor Who was seven weeks old

Here's something for Fathers' Day. Last week I did a post on my other blog that could just as easily have fitted in here, assuming that SF/fantasy gamers have, as I suspect, a wide overlap with Doctor Who fans. It's the story of how I became the first boy ever to meet a Dalek face-to-face. It was 1964. JFK had been shot, the Beatles were about to break big, but all I cared about were fluid links, static electricity, neutron bombs, police boxes and genocidal mutants. Happy days!

  1. One of the coolest aspects of the series is that the Daleks haven't really changed appearance in all these years. They nailed a unique design way back in '64 and it was perfect.

  2. I think the redesign they did last series made them look like hunchbacks. They have probably gone away for a while to see a chiropractor.

  3. The recent redesign has no integrity on any level. The BBC marketing people just want to sell new toys to every child who already had the old design, and they created the idea of specialized Dalek castes to force parents to buy multiple toys. It's an appalling example of corporate greed taking precedence over creativity and aesthetics. Given that the BBC already receive about £2 billion a year from a kind of poll tax, this sort of cynical money-grubbing strikes me as particularly objectionable. Ahem... flame off.
