FL computer game

A quick plug for Jon Mann's open source FLApp game, available as a free download, that lets you play through the first six Fabled Lands books, including the rare and elusive Over the Blood-Dark Sea. Jamie and I raise our glasses (a battered metal goblet in Jamie's case - no, really) to toast the labors of guys like Jon, who have given their time, energy, talents and enthusiasm to keep on adding to and enhancing the FL opus. Sláinte!

  2. Glad you enjoyed it! The thanks should really go equally to Jon Mann for doing such a great job of putting the books into online interactive format.

  3. You guys should adapt FLApp to work with older Palm Pilots. I bought a Tapwave Zodiac that has the Palm 5.0 OS and has 3d graphics capabilities. I know that the plucker files for some of the books are on the Yahoo group, but I would like to play the complete first half of the series as an interconnected adventure. Of course, i'm definitely going to buy multiple copies of the complete series in print when its available, keep up the good work everyone and here's too the future of Fabled Lands :')

  4. Thanks for the plug.
Mike: come pester me about porting FLApp; or even better, find me a developer with experience in Java for mobile apps and scads of free time :)

  5. We hope to get the books out in e-reader format, and if those do well enough that could lead to print editions and/or the rest of the series. All depends on whether enough people buy the e-books.

  6. If the e-reader books get completed this would be news of the decade. I really hope this becomes a reality, I'd definately be happy to pay for these as i'm sure many others would. You and Jamie Thompson did an amazing job on the first 6 books, i've yet to have a fictional adventure as consistently engaging as the ones I had in Fabled Lands. It's great playing the FLapp version, now I'm a bit older and understand the Kwaidan references in book 6; 'Hairy Arms' etc.
    Thanks again both
and Best of Luck for the future. (60 shards if non-initiate)

  7. I just kind of stumbled into this and so far I LOVE this, so much. Keep up the great work on both sides!

  8. Please, keep the FL work!
An e-book version would be excellent too.
Dave, Jamie (and Jon too) Thanks for your work!

I had previously tracked down print copies of the first 6 FL books (US "Quest" versions of the first 2, very expensive UK editions (via eBay, mostly) of #3-6). FLApp, though, is so accessible & appealing for younger gamers who grew up after the "golden age" of solo gamebooks, that my 2 computer-savvy teenagers have been playing FL campaigns alongside me (on separate computers). Trading tips about the best tactics to use in certain situations (or where to look for certain items) has given us more to chat about as well. Playing FLApp in parallel provides us with some of the best features of both table-top RPGs and MMORPG, without many of the more tedious or time & money-consuming bits.
If Dave & Jamie do ever complete books #7-12 (in any format), I'd love to see them as an expansion to FLApp as well (I'd even be willing to pay for the privilege of downloading them!).

  10. I just had to say that it was these books, namely, the Quest books 1 and 2 since I'm in the US who got me into gaming when I was younger and I still play D&D and everything here in college. I always wanted to see what happened in the other books but UK editions are rare and expensive so when this program came out I was ecstatic and couldn't put it down for hours. My favorite, however, was "Court of Hidden Faces" a book I never got to experience but is now my absolute favorite as the High King story and the Court itself are the coolest things ever. I hope one day you'll write the rest.

  11. Absolutely fantastic. This game led to my discovery of the Fabled Lands series.
